St. Louis drops from top 20 most populous metros, Census data shows

The St. Louis area has fallen from among the country’s 20 most populous metropolitan areas as its urban core continues to lose population, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released Thursday.

The region, which includes the city of St. Louis and 14 surrounding counties, fell to 21st on the list, replaced by Baltimore in the 20th spot.

The St. Louis metropolitan area grew overall, but it did so at a much slower rate than other metro areas.

St. Louis city’s population declined by more than 4,500 people, to 308,626. St. Louis County’s population also dipped, by about 1,500. The area as a whole saw its population grow slightly, to 2.8 million residents.
