1 Million Cups, which began last year as an experiment of the Kansas City-based Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, launched Wednesday in Chattanooga, Tenn., marking the seventh city to run the weekly startup pitch event. 1 Million Cups, which takes place weekly in Kansas City and St. Louis, hopes to spread to 20 total markets by the end of 2013.
“This is something much bigger than just showing companies,” said Nate Olson, a 1 Million Cups coordinator. Olson said the group has grown into a support network for young startups in both their home communities and through connections with other cities. 1 Million Cups celebrated its one-year anniversary in April.
