Nine tech startups joined the ranks of LaunchKC grant recipients on Friday, as the annual competition awarded a total of $500,000 in cash prizes.

Startup AgVoice won the $100,000 grand prize. The Atlanta-based company makes mobile voice technology designed to help professionals in the food and agriculture sector capture insights on the go.

Eight other companies claimed prizes of $50,000 apiece. Those companies are:

  • Boddle Learning (Kansas City)
  • Bungii (Overland Park, Kansas)
  • Digs (Chicago)
  • Erikos Systems (Kansas City)
  • Just Play (Lawrence, Kansas)
  • PlaBook (Kansas City)
  • Strayos (St. Louis)
  • Venture360 (Lee’s Summit)

The nine grant recipients were chosen from 20 finalists who pitched Friday morning as part of Techweek Kansas City. Those finalists emerged from an initial pool of 586 applicants, according to LaunchKC organizers.

In addition to the cash grants, the nine selected startups will receive mentorship, introductions and other assistance aimed at accelerating their growth.

LaunchKC, an initiative of Downtown Council and the Economic Development Corporation, was created to draw high-growth startups to Kansas City.

In its first four years, LaunchKC has awarded $2 million to 38 startups willing to move to or remain in Kansas City.
