A bill that would make the possession or sale of powdered alcohol a misdemeanor offense passed the Missouri House on Wednesday.
Bill sponsor Rep. Patricia Pike, an Adrian Republican, argued that powdered alcohol products target younger people and could worsen youth alcohol abuse and increase drunk driving.
Rep. Justin Alferman, R-Hermann, compared powdered alcohol to other synthetic substances such as K-2, synthetic marijuana already outlawed at the state level.
Opponents said the proposal was unnecessary, as alcohol is already restricted to those above the age of 21.
“If we would put some money behind actually enforcing alcohol laws that we already have, maybe we wouldn’t have as much of a problem with teenaged and underage drinking,” said Rep. Tracy McCreery, D-St.Louis.
