Gov. Eric Greitens has been served a subpoena by Attorney General Josh Hawley, a fellow Republican, as part of the investigation into whether Greitens used a list of donors to his veterans charity in his 2016 campaign for governor.
Although it was already known that subpoenas had been issued in the case, Thursday brought the first confirmation that the Republican governor was one of the targets.
Greitens founded the charity, The Mission Continues, in 2007. Last year, he signed a consent decree saying that his campaign received a list of donors to the charity in 2015 as an in-kind donation from campaign manager Daniel Laub.
However, the charity has denied that account. Giving Greitens’ gubernatorial campaign the list could violate federal law and jeopardize the charity’s tax-exempt status.
