McConnell Air Force base in Kansas is set to receive the long-awaited Boeing KC-46 tanker jet this month, Reuters reports.
Boeing, which has substantial operations of its defense division in the St. Louis area, has spent approximately $3 billion on the long-delayed production of the tanker jet. The U.S. Air Force has accepted the first delivery, a spokesperson told Reuters Thursday.
“Significant engineering work” was done to fix the jets’ refueling mechanisms, responsiveness and monitors, among other features.
As many as four of the planned 179 tankers could land at McConnell this month.
