Amidst a federal lawsuit over its billing practices, Kansas City-based hospital operator EmpowerHMS is unable to pay its workers.
Employees at the Horton Community Hospital in northeast Kansas say they didn’t receive their paychecks on Friday.
Empower also failed to buy supplies and neglected utility bills at the Horton facility, according to the Tokeka Capital-Journal.
Last month, a judge allowed the city of Hillsboro, Kansas, to remove Empower as its hospital’s operator, citing “irreparable harm” that could occur with its continued operation. Empower hospitals in Oklahoma and Tennessee have filed similar petitions.
Empower CEO Jorge Perez, who is facing federal charges over false billing practices, has declined to speak with news organizations.
