A Missouri Senate bill is bringing tort reform back to the fore in Jefferson City.
Senate Bill 7, sponsored by Sen. Ed Emery, R-Lamar, seeks to change what are known as “joinder” rules in Missouri and restrict the ability for plaintiffs to create mass lawsuits.
Under current rules, individuals can join a lawsuit as long as they are suing over the same facts. If Emery’s bill passes, it would be more difficult for plaintiffs to join the lawsuits.
Similar bills have received support from groups like Monsanto, the Missouri Hospital Association and the American Tort Reform Association. Opponents of these tort reform bills include the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys.
