Appeal Hearing Granted in Monsanto, Agriculture Group Case

The Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association has been granted an appeal hearing in January after its lawsuit against Monsanto was dismissed earlier this year.

Oral arguments by the Washington, Maine-based association will be heard Jan. 10 at the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C., Maine’s Bangor Daily News reports.

The organization and 82 plaintiffs sued Monsanto in March 2011 to challenge the validity of several of the company’s patents for genetically modified crops. The farmers also want protection from being sued by Monsanto in case the seeds contaminate their crops through drift or cross pollination.
