The Health Care Checkup is a rundown of the state’s top health care headlines from the last week.
Senate leaves Medicaid expansion off budget
One of the largest crowds to turn out this year at the Missouri Capitol rallied with Gov. Jay Nixon last week to urge hesitant Republican lawmakers to expand Medicaid coverage. Nixon’s office estimated the rally drew more than 1,000 people, ranging from business leaders to health care providers to police officers.
But those crowds couldn’t turn the tide of Senate opinion in favor of Medicaid expansion. Late Monday night, the Senate passed a $25 billion budget proposal that did not include funding to expand Medicaid.
The move was consistent with thoughts expressed all session by the state’s Republican legislators, who have consistently balked at the expansion called for by the Affordable Care Act.
