The Columbia City Council tonight will consider a proposal to further ease marijuana ordinances by decriminalizing the possession of up to 35 grams of marijuana or the cultivation of up to two marijuana plants.
The Columbia chapter of the NAACP and the Boone County Libertarian Party have both endorsed the measure. The chairman of the Boone County Libertarian Party said “marijuana prohibition is a failed policy.”
The League of Women Voters of Columbia-Boone County, the Central Missouri Chapter of the Missouri Association for Social Welfare, and the Missouri Civil Liberties Association also have endorsed the bill. A July report by the Columbia Human Rights Commission also said that the bill is appropriate because of racial disparities in marijuana arrests and prosecutions.
