Small Business Saturday provides boost for local retailers

Retailers across the Kansas City area and around the state participated over the weekend in Small Business Saturday, the little guys’ answer to Black Friday.

Swarms of shoppers descended on the Brookside shopping district in Kansas City, where the owner of educational toy store Brookside Toy & Science said his shop has seen business triple on Small Business Saturday since the event’s inception.

American Express helped jumpstart the movement in 2010, offering special deals to help small businesses lure more customers. Many local businesses offer deals for the day, and many say they have seen significant bumps in traffic as a result of the event.
