Monsanto targets home gardeners with new vegetable seeds



Monsanto has released 10 new vegetable seed varieties, including yellow wax beans, zucchini, peppers, lettuce, broccoli, jalapeno peppers and spinach. The seeds, which are targeted at home gardeners, bear names like “Flaming Flare” peppers and “Green Beret” spinach.

Creve Coeur-based Monsanto, the world’s largest seed company, got into the gardening business in 2005 with its acquisition of vegetable breeder Seminis. Home garden seed sales make up approximately 4 percent of the company’s total vegetable business.
