Among the bills passed at the end of the Missouri Legislature’s session and now awaiting action by Gov. Jay Nixon is a measure that would let brewers lease coolers to retailers.
The measure has stirred up controversy because it’s viewed as pitting the interests of big brewers like Anheuser-Busch InBev against smaller craft brewers. Opponents of the measure say craft brewers can’t afford to outfit sellers with coolers the way large beer manufacturers or wholesalers can.
Rep. Robert Cornejo, R-St. Charles, the bill’s handler in the House, said it has certain provisions that seek to protect small brewers, including one that would prevent big brewers from having more than one cooler in a store.
The Legislature would have to revisit the bill in three years if it becomes law.
