Garnett Stokes will take over as interim chancellor of the University of Missouri in Columbia, University of Missouri System President Mun Choi announced Tuesday. Stokes currently serves as provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at the university.
Stokes will fill a void created by the departure of another interim chancellor, Hank Foley. Foley announced in late March that he was leaving MU to become president of the New York Institute of Technology. He has served as interim chancellor since R. Bowen Loftin resigned amid racial tension and protests on the campus in November 2015.
Stokes’ appointment was approved Tuesday by the University of Missouri Board of Curators, according to a statement from the UM System. She will occupy the position until a permanent chancellor is identified through a national search. The announcement of a new chancellor is expected “in the coming weeks,” according to the statement.
Stokes arrived at MU from Florida State University in February 2015. She has hired eight of the 13 deans currently serving on the campus, and MU established its Office of Civil Rights and Title IX under her leadership.
