Alpha Energy and Electric Inc. received the Mr. K Award as Kansas City’s small business of the year on Tuesday at the annual Small Business Celebration hosted by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.
Ike Nwabuonwu, Alpha’s chairman and CEO, accepted the award on behalf of his company, an engineering and construction firm that started with two people in a two-room office in 2005. The company also was named the International Small Business of the Year.
Among the domestic projects Alpha Energy has won or participated in: renovation of Kauffman and Arrowhead Stadiums, the Sprint Center, and the JE Dunn Corporate Headquarters.
In accepting the award, Nwabuonwu thanked JE Dunn Construction and Mark One Electric Co. Inc., and his employees, whom he called the backbone of the company. He also renewed the company’s commitment to the urban core, where it got its “humble start.”
Alpha plans to expand its headquarters, located in Kansas City’s urban core, by 3,400 square feet in June. It also is working on creating a community improvement district in the area.
