Opponents of tolls on I-70 seek to kill idea for good

A group opposed to making Interstate 70 a toll road is moving ahead with a petition campaign to put the issue before Missouri voters in 2018.

If passed, an amendment would be added to the Missouri Constitution banning tolls on I-70 and all other state roads.

This action comes after anti-toll wording was added to the state Department of Transportation’s 2017-2018 budget, after lobbying efforts by the group, called A Better Way Forward. The group says charging people and businesses to use I-70 amounts to double taxation because they would still be paying the state gas tax that funds the Missouri Department of Transportation.

The transportation department, which has grappled in recent years with a budget crunch, has plans to renovate the crumbling highway, a project that would cost between $2 billion and $4 billion.
