Springfield company soon will be sole producer of cassette tapes



National Audio Company, a sprawling factory in downtown Springfield, will soon be the only place in the country, maybe even the world, to make the tape that goes inside audiocassettes.

National Audio ‘s factory makes more than 10 million cassettes per year, despite a worldwide shortage of manufacturers in recent years, said president and co-owner Steve Stepp. For many years, the company muddled through by purchasing stocks of tape from other manufacturers, but then the supply started drying up.

Thus, more than five decades after audiocassettes were invented by a Dutch engineer, National Audio decided to make tape again.
