Energizer buying Rayovac batteries for $2 billion

Energizer Holdings is buying Rayovac batteries and other battery and lighting products from Spectrum Brands for $2 billion, leaving Town and Country-based Energizer as one of two major global battery makers, along with Duracell.

The sale, announced early Tuesday, is expected to close by the end of the year, pending regulatory approval.

The acquisition increases Energizer’s presence in international markets, expands its product portfolio and increases its capacity for research and development, the company said in a statement.

Spectrum, based in Middleton, Wisconsin, said the sale allows it to focus on products with higher margins.

Spectrum’s pest control and home and garden subsidiary, United Industries, has its operational headquarters St. Louis County. United’s brands include Spectracide, Garden Safe, Hot Shot, Cutter, Repel and Schultz.
