The St. Louis-area transit system announced Wednesday that it will add at least two electric buses to its fleet by late 2020.
Metro Transit said it will use a $1.45 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration’s Low or No Emission Vehicle Program. Ameren Missouri has pledged $1 million for power supply equipment for charging the buses. Metro is seeking more funding to add additional buses to its fleet.

Metro officials said that the electric buses can cost about twice as much as diesel counterparts upfront, but save money over time with lower maintenance costs. Metro currently operates 400 diesel buses in St. Louis.
