Belleville newspaper to move print and packaging to KC, cut jobs

The Kansas City Star will take over print and packaging operations for the Belleville News-Democrat starting in August, the newspapers’ parent company, McClatchy, announced Monday.

Twenty-four full- and part-time employees will lose their jobs with the publication, based in Belleville, Illinois.

Jeffry Couch, editor and general manager of the News-Democrat, said the move stemmed from a need to reduce costs in the face of changing reader habits.

Transportation and distribution for the News-Democrat will remain in Belleville.
