A growing number of St. Louis businesses in the hospitality and food service industries have started maintaining their own beehives in a move that provides the businesses with fresh local honey and helps combat a condition threatening global bee populations.
Hotels including the Chase Park Plaza and Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch, as well as restaurants like Eleven Eleven Mississippi and Vin de Set keep hives to harvest their own honey.
The trend has been a boost to business for Jane Sueme, founder of Isabee’s, a local beekeeping store. She has provided training and equipment to businesses interested in setting up their own hives.
Gunter Weber, executive chef at the Chase Park Plaza, said one hive can produce up to 15 gallons of honey in a year.
