Brewers applaud new state system for approving labels



A new state system for regulating how beer and wine are labeled has been met by cheers from local producers.

The Missouri Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Control (ATC) has a new online portal for submitting new label registrations or making changes to old labels that became mandatory at the start of this year.

Previously, companies had to submit labels by mail and wait for the ATC’s response. The process took up to eight months in some cases.

Craft brewers said the old system slowed down the process of getting new labels on store shelves.

In 2017, the ATC reviewed 15,000 label submissions, with beer labels accounting for about a quarter and wine making up the rest.

Ashley Troutman, who oversees the labeling process for Urban Chestnut, a craft brewer in St. Louis, called the old system a “logistical nightmare” and said the new portal could enable the brewery to submit more labels for consideration this year.
