The St. Louis County-based division of defense contractor Leonardo DRS has been awarded a $193 million defense contract to equip U.S. Army tanks with new defense systems.
DRS Land Systems, a division of Virginia-based Leonardo DRS, is based in Cool Valley. The U.S. Department of Defense announced the contract last month.
The TROPHY system the company will install is used to help protect tanks from missiles and rocket-propelled grenades.
The division has about 400 employees in West Plains, mainly in manufacturing and production roles, and another 300 in the St. Louis area, largely in engineering and business support functions.
DRS Land Systems has boosted its headcount by about 20 percent since the start of last year in anticipation of new contracts.
