Medicaid Expansion Would Help Mentally Ill

Expanding Medicaid could insure an additional 64,000 individuals, according to a report from the National Alliance of Mental Illness. About 15.5 percent of uninsured adults in Missouri would benefit from the increased coverage. The state legislature has declined to expand the rules for Medicaid eligibility, which would require the state governments to offer insurance to individuals at or below 138 percent of the federal poverty line.

The report indicated that people with mental illnesses would be more willing to seek out treatment if their health insurance made it more affordable.
