Rep. Keith English of Florissant on Tuesday left the Missouri House Democratic Caucus to become an Independent.
English was elected to the House in 2012 as a Democrat, but his views on issues including gun control and abortion differed from many lawmakers in his own party.
Turmoil between English and the Democrats began in May 2014, when English voted with Republicans to override Gov. Jay Nixon’s veto on an income tax cut bill. He was the only Democrat to do so.
English is the second representative to defect from the Democratic caucus in three months. In November, Rep. Linda Black of St. Francois County left the Democrats to become a Republican.
The latest departure leaves Democrats with just 44 of the chamber’s 163 seats.
