Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich officially announced his bid for governor in 2016, and in the process he launched the first salvo against Rex Sinquefield, the state’s top political donor and a backer of Schweich’s Republican primary opponent, Catherine Hanaway.
Schweich said Sinquefield is looking to “buy a governor” and that the wealthy St.Louis financier has been engaging in “corrosive tactics’’ with “an army of mercenaries.’’
The auditor’s announcement Wednesday ended months of speculation about his political future. He’s been viewed as a likely Republican candidate for governor in 2016, but he declined to discuss the future until after the 2014 election.
Schweich is the second statewide elected official to declare for the 2016 race, joining Attorney General Chris Koster, a Democrat.
