The Kansas City Council approved a resolution Thursday opposing state lawmakers’ efforts to restrict local control over the minimum wage.
The council joined mayors from across the state in encouraging the Missouri Legislature to sustain Gov. Jay Nixon’s veto of a bill that would prohibit municipalities from raising their minimum wage above the state’s level. The bill would also prevent cities from banning plastic bags.
The Republican-controlled legislature, which passed the bill during its legislative session earlier this year, is expected to attempt an override of the Democratic governor’s decision during next week’s veto session.
Advocates for labor groups and low-wage workers have blasted the bill, saying it will prevent cities from setting employment policies.
