CHART: Visualizing the income gap between Missouri counties

Income is distributed unevenly across Missouri, according to the most recent estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, with residents of the state’s top-earning county bringing in nearly three times as much annual income as residents of the lowest-income county.

The highest earnings are concentrated in the state’s largest metropolitan areas, St. Louis and Kansas City. Conversely, the counties with the lowest average incomes are located in the south-central part of the state, as well as the Bootheel in the state’s southeast corner.

St. Louis County had the highest per capita personal income in 2018, at more than $71,300. Hickory County had the lowest, at just under $27,800.
