Cerner made its Fortune 500 debut, and Centene continued its ascent into the upper echelon of the country’s biggest businesses, highlighting a group of 10 Missouri-based companies to make the magazine’s annual list of largest U.S. companies by revenue.
Cerner, the North Kansas City-based health care information technology provider, made its first appearance among the top 500, at No. 498. The company, which ranked just outside the top 500 a year ago, recorded revenue of $5.69 billion, a 6% increase over last year, according to Forbes.
Centene, the Clayton-based managed care provider, reached a Fortune 500 milestone of its own, appearing in the list’s top 50 for the first time. The company ranked 42nd this year with revenue of $74.63 billion, a 24% increase from a year ago.
Ferguson-based Emerson Electric was the only other Missouri company to rank among Fortune’s top 200, climbing two spots, to No. 176.
Peabody Energy, the St. Louis-based coal company, fell out of the top 500 after ranking 499th last year. The coal giant’s revenue declined to $4.62 billion, a 17% decrease.
Eight of the 10 Missouri companies on the list are based in the St. Louis area, with Cerner and Springfield-based O’Reilly Automotive the only exceptions. One other company from the Kansas City area — Merriam, Kansas-based conglomerate Seaboard — made the list, ranking No. 444.
Walmart remained the top company on the list, with revenue of more than $523 billion. Amazon jumped three spots to No. 2 as its revenue grew more than 20%. Exxon Mobil, Apple and CVS Health rounded out the top five.
