Missouri’s weekly unemployment claims hit highest level since June

Initial unemployment claims in Missouri surged to more than 19,000 for the week ended Feb. 20, their highest level in nearly nine months, according to the Missouri Department of Labor.

It marked the fourth consecutive week of increasing claims and the ninth week in a row in which claims exceeded 10,000. As Missouri continues to face the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, unemployment numbers persistently exceed long-term historical averages.

While unemployment claims in Missouri increased for the week, initial claims nationally decreased by about 110,000, to 730,000, for the week ended Feb. 20, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
