Charting October employment gains and recovery from pandemic job losses

With U.S. employers topping expectations by adding 531,000 jobs in October, the American economy took another step toward recovering to pre-pandemic employment levels.

With the increase, 81% of the more than 20 million jobs lost in the first two months of the pandemic have been restored to the economy.

The sector seeing the most job growth in October was leisure and hospitality, with 164,000 jobs added. Others seeing significant increases were professional and business services, manufacturing, transportation and warehousing and construction.

The only decreases in the last month came in the education sectors, with both local public education and state government education decreasing by more than 20,000.
