Chinese Trade Helps St. Louis-Area Exports Surge In 2012

Exports in metro St. Louis grew by 19 percent in 2012, reaching a new record high as companies sold $14.6 billion worth of goods overseas. For the second straight year, the biggest destination of local exports was China, which bought $2.6 billion worth of St. Louis-made products. Exports to China have more than doubled since 2010. Three of St. Louis’ top five export markets are in Asia, and none are in Europe. Mining equipment and transportation equipment were among sectors with the biggest growth last year.
