Do Incentives To Attract Businesses Pay Off?

Government-sponsored incentives often can help establish a business and create jobs, but views vary on how much they benefit a community long term — especially when businesses that receive those incentives start laying off workers. The management professor at Southeast Missouri State University who directs the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship has researched the region’s job creation as it relates to tax abatements and other public incentives designed to draw and keep companies in local communities. He found over a 20-year period “the net number of jobs created from businesses that were attracted into the region versus ones that were attracted away from the region were essentially zero.”
