Support Group For St. Louis Jobless Closes

Go! Network, the grass-roots job-skills and networking group founded in the depths of the Great Recession to help laid-off workers get back on their feet, has closed. The program was supposed to last only a few weeks, but it just kept going and going, not unlike the jobs crisis it was intended to help ease. Funding for the nonprofit organization was always touch-and-go — the Go! Network announced multiple shutdowns over the years before last-minute donations kept it afloat. The executive director says things have gotten a bit better the last year or two. The people who join the Go! Network are finding new jobs faster.

More than anything, she said, the job market has changed. The days when a worker could expect to work 9 to 5 for the same company for decades are increasingly in the past. And the sooner people come to terms with that and develop the skills and flexibility for the new economy, the better off they’ll be.
