Coventry Health Inc. confirmed that it will be the second insurer in eastern Missouri to take part in the state’s health insurance exchange, which opens for enrollment Tuesday.

BJC HealthCare said its patients using the exchange will have access to medical treatment from doctors and other providers in the BJC network. Initially, it appeared to some that BJC HealthCare would be out of the picture after the first insurer to join the exchange, Athem BlueCross BlueShield, disclosed that it was excluding the hospital system. The BJC network includes 13 hospitals in the region.

A Coventry spokesman had no immediate data on the plan or plans that will be offered in the Coventry program. The company was recently acquired by Aetna. Consumers will be able to make side-by-side comparisons of various health plans offered by the two insurers after the online marketplace Tuesday.
