Unemployment Claims Surge In Missouri After Shutdown

Unemployment claims have increased more than 10 percent in Missouri since the federal government shutdown began a week ago. A Missouri Department of Labor spokesman said he could not say whether the spike is because of furloughed federal workers, but he said an increase that large is not typical.

Federal workers who have been furloughed can apply for unemployment benefits immediately. However, it is likely no workers have actually begun receiving benefits yet — according to the department’s website, the processing time on new claims is 10 days, and the shutdown began Monday.
