Wal-Mart’s Walton family, with members in Columbia, topped the Forbes list of America’s wealthiest families, with a net worth of $152 billion. The Busch and Pulitzer families in St. Louis and the Hall and Ward families in Kansas City also rank among the wealthiest, according to a Forbes magazine survey. The list only included large family businesses.
Forbes said it left out married couples and “self-made entrepreneurs who founded their companies” and make the Forbes 400 list with their nuclear family. That explains the absence of billionaires such as Neal Patterson of Cerner and Gary Burrell and Min Kao of Garmin, both from the Kansas City area, and Jack Taylor, the founder of car rental giant Enterprise Holdings in St. Louis.
