Youth employment report shows small gains

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics announced small gains in the youth employment sector Wednesday, reporting that 20.1 million American between the ages of 16 and 24 held jobs in July, a small increase over the nearly 19.7 million employed youth reported in July 2013.

The bureau’s annual summer report on youth employment and unemployment said that those numbers corresponded to 51.9 percent of the age group being employed in July, compared to 50.7 percent last year.

Nearly 3.4 million in that age group were unemployed in July, down from 3.8 million a year earlier, pushing the youth youth unemployment rate down 2 percentage points from a year ago to 14.3 percent.
