Program to help 500 young men in St. Louis area with job training, placement

In the wake of unrest in Ferguson, the Urban League in St. Louis has landed $1.2 million in donations from big-name companies for a program to help with job training and placement for 500 young men in north St. Louis County.

The program, called Save our Sons, was developed after Urban League officials talked to young men on the streets. The overwhelming message was that the young men needed jobs, and the numbers back up the anecdotal evidence: The unemployment rate for black men in St. Louis County is about triple that of the rate for whites.

The program is working with its first class of 20, and two St. Louis companies — who wish to remain anonymous — have promised to hire the first 40 graduates.
