KC lags peers in post-recession recovery, report says

Kansas City ranks 73rd of 80 cities in terms of its recovery since the recession, according to a new report from the Brookings Institution.

The report, which ranks cities by their growth in productivity and jobs since the end of the recession in 2009, is the second study in the last year to show Kansas City is lagging its peers in post-recession recovery.

The report shows Kansas City’s gross domestic product shrank by 1.3 percent in 2013 and increased 0.3 percent in the five years after 2009. The 2013 GDP figure is particularly puzzling because employment in the area grew, and productivity is expected to follow suit.
