St. Louis continues to lag rest of US in post-recession job recovery

Recovery from the Great Recession has been slower in St. Louis than it has been most other places across the country, with the region lagging much of the U.S. in job growth and economic production.

As of December, St. Louis was still 35,000 jobs short of its pre-recession peak, and the area ranked 45th out of 50 large metro areas in job growth from 2010 to 2013.

Since the recession ended in 2009, the number of jobs nationwide has increased 8 percent; in St. Louis, that number is up just 3.6 percent. In the last year, that trend has continued: Jobs are up 2.3 percent nationwide, but just 1.3 percent in St. Louis.
