Violence and business damage mark Ferguson anniversary

A day meant for solemn remembrance in Ferguson, Mo. boiled over into a repeat of the previous year’s events as the anniversary of the shooting of African American teenager Michael Brown turned violent and, in some instances, threatening to nearby businesses.

A suspect is in “critical, unstable” condition in a nearby hospital after exchanging gunshots with police. The suspect, identified by his father as Tyrone Harris, Junior, was described as a close friend of Michael Brown. St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said in a news conference that Harris fired first upon the officers; Harris’s father contends witnesses told him his son was fleeing a violent scene and was unarmed.

Meanwhile, businesses on West Florissant Avenue reported vandalism and theft during the night. One incident involved an attempt to steal a cash register from a beauty supply store; another, tweeted by Alderman Antonio French, involved stealing laptops and iPads from the #HealSTL offices.
