Joe Reardon, the head of the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority and former mayor of Kansas City, Kan., will become the new president and chief executive of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.

Reardon succeeds Jim Heeter, who has led the chamber since 2010 and announced in April that he would retire at the end of the year.

Like Heeter, Reardon, 46, is an attorney. He was mayor of Kansas City, Kan., for eight years and served on the board of governors for the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., before that. His father, Jack Reardon, also served as the city’s mayor, and his uncle, Bill Reardon, was a state representative in Kansas.

Reardon started as head of the transportation authority in April.

The chairman of the transportation authority’s board, Robbie Makinen, is expected to be nominated to replace Reardon on an interim basis. An announcement is expected during Wednesday’s meeting of the authority’s board of commissioners.
