The Week Ahead: Legislature convenes, Monsanto reports earnings, Chiefs open playoffs

Here’s a look at some of the stories Missouri Business Alert is tracking this week:

Traders return for the first full week of action on Wall Street since before the Christmas and New Years holidays. A final-day selloff on Thursday drove the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index below its year-opening level, marking the first annual drop for the key index since 2011, Bloomberg reports.

Motor vehicle sales for December will be released. Automakers finished 2015 with strong sales in the months leading up to December. Vehicle sales were one of the highlights of the U.S. economy in 2015, according to Econoday.

The Missouri Legislature begins its 2016 session in Jefferson City. The session is scheduled to run until May 13.

Monsanto is scheduled to report earnings for its first quarter of Fiscal 2016. In its last earnings call, the Creve Coeur-based seed maker announced it would lay off 2,600 employees as part of a restructuring program to deal with a commodities slump.

Chain stores will report their sales for December. The monthly update is expected to provide a good indicator of the strength of the holiday sales season.

The Labor Department will release its summary of the U.S. employment situation for December. The unemployment rate has been 5.0 percent for the last two months, its lowest level since April 2008.

The Kansas City Chiefs return to the NFL playoffs for the second time in three years with a game either Saturday or Sunday. The team is searching for its first playoff win since January 1994.
