Express Scripts leads 10 Missouri companies in Fortune 500

Express Scripts once again led Missouri’s contingent of companies on an annual list of the largest U.S companies by revenue, checking in at No. 22 on the 2017 Fortune 500 released Wednesday.

Ten Missouri companies made the list, with nine of them coming from the St. Louis area.

Fortune ranks companies by total revenue for their respective fiscal years.

Walmart topped the list with revenue of about $485.9 billion, more than double No. 2 Berkshire Hathaway. Apple, Exxon Mobil and McKesson rounded out the top five.

It’s the third year in a row that Express Scripts, the pharmacy benefits manager headquartered in St. Louis County, has held the 22nd spot. The company recorded revenue of about $100.3 billion for its last fiscal year, down about 1.4 percent from the year prior.

Express Scripts has benefited from a glut of newly insured Americans under the Affordable Care Act, Fortune points out, but faces a threat to a large chunk of its revenue due to an ongoing dispute with insurer Anthem, its biggest customer.

Centene, the fast-growing health insurer based in Clayton, was the next Missouri company on the Fortune list, at No. 66. Centene made one of the biggest jumps of any company in this year’s ranking, climbing 58 spots from 2016. It reported revenue of $40.7 billion.

Emerson Electric, the Ferguson based electronics and electrical equipment company, was No. 139 on the list, rounding out Missouri’s top three and representing the only other Show-Me State company in the top half of the 500. Emerson reported revenue of about $20.3 billion and slipped 11 spots from No. 128 on last year’s list.

There was little turnover in terms of Missouri’s contingent on the list. Olin returned to the top 500, checking in at No. 467. Peabody Energy, which ranked No. 458 last year, slid out of the top 500, to No. 533.
