Mnuchin talks economic growth, geographic disparities in St. Louis visit

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin remains resolved in his belief that Republican tax cuts will pay for themselves through economic growth, and that President Donald Trump’s policies will boost the American economy outside of major coastal cities. So said the U.S. Treasury chief on Wednesday, when he visited St. Louis along with the president.

Mnuchin sat down with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for an interview during the visit, touching on a variety of topics. Below are a small sampling of Mnuchin’s thoughts.

On the the likelihood of Navy contracts with Boeing in 2019 and beyond:

The president was successful with Congress in increasing the military budgets significantly. This is one of his big goals going back to the campaign. He thinks it’s critical that we reinvest in the military and make sure it has the proper equipment, and Boeing is obviously a critical supplier.

On economic growth paying for tax reform:

We’re very comfortable that the tax reform will pay for itself through economic growth. I think over the long term, we’ll have to look at the deficits and the issue of the deficits.

On equal geographic distribution of economic growth

We’re very comfortable that the tax reform will pay for itself through economic growth. I think over the long term, we’ll have to look at the deficits and the issue of the deficits.
