Josh Wexler is no stranger to business ventures. But after he ran a sign-production company and co-founded a nonprofit, a desire to get healthy led him to his current passion: kombucha.
Wexler is the co-owner of DrinKraft, a unique twist on a traditional bar that serves up coffee, tea, cocktails and specially brewed kombucha in Columbia. Kombucha is a fermented tea that has been referred to as the “gut’s best friend” due to the presence of probiotics.
“The first one I tried was super fizzy, vinegary, totally gross tasting,” Wexler said. “But I was like, ‘It’s medicine; I’ll drink it,’ and before I knew it the fridge was full of kombucha.”
Wexler saw a noticeable difference in how he felt, and he began to brew his own kombucha alongside Peter Hinshaw, his co-founder.
DrinKraft opened its doors in June 2018 in Columbia’s North Village Arts District with over a dozen kombucha flavors on tap, such as lemon, ginger, and beet Rosemary. Wexler said he was excited to bring a non-traditional bar setting to Columbia.
“It’s not a college bar. It’s not a dive bar. It’s a kind of place where you can come with your family, you come up on a date night,” Wexler said. “You don’t feel the pressure of a bar, but there is still an option for it.”
The business: DrinKraft brews kombucha, iced teas and nitro coffee. It distributes to about 20 locations in mid-Missouri, and it operates a tasting cafe in Columbia’s North Village Arts District.
