After she was laid off from her job as a newspaper reporter last year, Kelsey Ryan began digging into models for delivering in-depth local news. She observed a troubling trend.
“We live in this world where now you know about Notre Dame burning within minutes, but you don’t know about what’s going on in your own city council meeting,” Ryan said. “And those are the things that really impact us far more than some of the national headlines.”
Enter The Beacon, Ryan’s startup news organization aiming to address gaps in local news coverage in the Kansas City region. The publication is set to launch next year, and Ryan talked with us about what goes into starting a news organization.
Plus, Carrie Gartner, executive director of the Loop Community Improvement District in Columbia, joined us to discuss The Loop’s focus on makers and the role small businesses will play in the neighborhood’s redevelopment.
