Kansas City native Michael Barrera will become the new district director for the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) office in Kansas City, replacing Jon Malcolm, who has been in office since 2015.
Barrera joined the SBA in November 2020 as the North Florida district director and will be replaced in that role by Malcolm, according to a press release.
Barrera is an attorney and small business advocate. He was past president of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Kansas City Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, according to the release.
His family has run a Kansas City-area restaurant for more than 50 years, and his father was a founder of both the U.S. and Kansas City Hispanic chambers.
The Kansas City district office is dedicated to the SBA’s larger mission of supporting entrepreneurs and small business owners in the area. It covers 89 counties in western Missouri and eastern Kansas with a field office in Springfield. It oversees nine Small Business Development Centers, four SCORE chapters, and one Women’s Business Center.
